This is an article I did today on the high rate of unemployment among Hispanics/African Americans in large metro areas. The numbers are astonishing. In some areas like Las Vegas, black unemployment statistics are comparable to the highest national rates of the Great Depression. I ask, what can be done to curb these statistics?
Algernon Austin, director of the EPI’s Program on Race, Ethnicity and the Economy, described the wealth gap this way: “In 2009, for every dollar of wealth the average white household had, black households only had two cents.”
Black wealth has never been the same as white wealth. While whites had assets to pass down to their families, blacks were left behind by the policies and language in the new deal. Blacks were excluded by certain provisions.
